Common myths and legends that usually appear when testing and choosing guitars:
 

• Buy the instrument from an elderly luthier with many guitars under his belt.

Every myth has some truth to it: although it is reasonable that there is some truth in this postulate, there are examples of builders with numerous instruments under their belt with meager results, and vice versa: new luthiers who, despite being in their first development stage, they build magnificently.

• Heavy guitar is louder / light guitar is louder.

Data is missing in this reasoning. What will make the instrument louder will be its weight/stiffness ratio.

• Guitars polished with shellac sound more and better.

While it is true that polishes influence the quality of the instrument, it is not so easy to advocate for any type of polish in particular, beyond personal preferences.

• Mechanical headstock versus wooden pegs (in flamenco guitars).

On more than one occasion I was forced to replace wooden tuners with mechanical tuners, without “hearing” any difference in favor of one device or the other. Wooden pegs tend to hold better tuning, although they generally present a challenge when learning to use them.

• Guitars made from one wood are better than those made from another.

There are innumerable preferences when it comes to the choice of each luthier and each musician in the field of raw materials. There are some historically well-proven woods that are used with repeated success. Which does not mean that, necessarily, new options will not appear.

• An instrument used by an international guitar star is the best option.

It is very likely that a great musician owns an excellent guitar, but in any case it would be necessary to see if it fits the taste and pocket of each person.

• If the instrument is more expensive, there must be a reason!

Too many factors intervene in shaping the sales price of an instrument that, sometimes, have little to do with its quality. Good advertising, or the business of intermediaries, can substantially change the value of a good instrument, bringing it to the price of a collector's jewel.

The values that certain ancient instruments currently hold have more to do with the collecting business than with the quality of the object (not in all cases), which is sometimes valued as a work of art. ..
